Richard Self’s Sculptures

Richard, who works at our Accident Repair Centre, is a keen sculptor and he kindly shared with us some photos of his latest sculptures – fish made from car wings.

Richard has been sculpting for approx 30yrs.  He got started by assisting his brother Colin Self with some of his sculptures.  Colin is an internationally acclaimed ‘pop’ artist, whose friends include David Hockney, Peter Blake and Holly Jonson to name but a few.

Richard makes a myriad of sculptures, not only using car parts but all things, animals, flowers, planes, guitars are just a few.  He uses various types of materials steel, wood, glass fibre, plastics etc.

His fish sculptures came about because he doesn’t paint pictures, and wanted some sculptures to fill some wall space.

Richards work hasn’t been exhibited, but 3-4 years ago he made a Lancaster bomber from a domestic mixer tap with guidance from his brother with which he won the Charles Wooleston £25,000 first prize at the royal academy.

As for his inspirations Richard says. “I am inspired by any discarded object of interest, having the perception of what could I make from it, just a little imagination I guess, as we all have the ability to see faces etc in clouds and that sort of thing”.

Richard has an entire portfolio of his work and his ambition is to have his own exhibition.
